A61 Corridor

The ‘A61 corridor’ into and through Chesterfield was among the first of D2N2’s named Growth Deal projects; setting out infrastructure funding priorities to support economic growth, to be funded from 2015/16 onwards.

D2N2 is putting £12.8million from its LGF allocation to support a total £16m package of measures to provide infrastructure improvements and reduce commuter journey times, provide sustainable transport routes, and also ‘unlock’ opportunities for major housing and employment growth along the A61 corridor through Chesterfield and into north-east Derbyshire.

Derbyshire County, Chesterfield Borough and North East Derbyshire District councils are behind the business case (and additional funding) for the project. Specific development areas include at Wingerworth and Clay Cross.

The project will be carried out over five years, due for completion 2020/21.

Among the considerations will be how the A61 improvements take into account the Government’s preferred HS2 Phase Two route through the D2N2 area; with a planned line running through north-east Derbyshire and creating an HS2 maintenance depot and station at Staveley.
