D2N2 and MIPIM

MIPIM - an acronym taken from the French 'Le Marché International des Professionnels de L'IMmobilieror' - is arguably the largest annual global property and developers’ conference, usually held each year in Cannes, southern France, in March.

It gathers influential property industry people, developers and potential investors from around the globe; for four days of networking, learning and transaction through a series of premium events, conferences and dedicated exhibition zones.

The D2N2 LEP is a firm supporter of (and has invested in) the delegation by its area's local authorities and businesses to MIPIM annual events, and both D2N2's Chair Peter Richardson and Chief Executive David Ralph have attended MIPIM events, to promote the area's development opportunities.

MIPIM also has a sister event, MIPIM UK, which D2N2 officers have attended and spoken at.

Sites linked to the D2N2 LEP area, featured in the Pitchbook, included:

  • The Nottingham & Derby Enterprise Zone - which D2N2 and its partners manage the business strategy for.
  • Berry Hill, Mansfield – A 480 acre site on the boundary of Nottingham and Mansfield, adjacent to Vision West Nottinghamshire College’s main campus.
  • Drakelow Park, Walton-upon-Trent, South Derbyshire – One of the region’s largest brownfield sites, the location was previously home to three coal-fired power stations.

D2N2 Chief Executive David Ralph was part of a 'Derby Showcase' business panel at the 2016 MIPIM UK event, at the Olympia London exhibition centre, which used quotes from legendary Nottingham and Derby football manager Brian Clough as a springboard for discussion about the cities’ future. Investment opportunities worth a total of £14.4billion were ‘pitched’ at MIPIM 2016 in cannes, by partners in the Midlands Engine – with the help of D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership area businesses and local authorities.

The ‘UK Midlands Engine Pitchbook’ contained details of 33 different property and investment opportunities from across the region, including prime sites in the D2N2 area such as Infinity Park in Derby (pictured below, is the Park's Innovation Centre), part of the Nottingham & Derby Enterprise Zone.

Businesses, local authorities and the 11 Local Enterprise Partnership which form part of the ‘Midlands Engine’ – the initiative for greater region-wide co-operation to grow the Midlands’ economy – worked with UK Trade and Investment’s Regeneration Investment Organisation, to put the Pitchbook together. Representatives from the D2N2 area and wider Midlands at MIPIM promoted the Pitchbook. To read more about the event CLICK HERE.

D2N2 joined its business and local authority partners at the March 2015 MIPIM event as part of a delegation set on showcasing opportunities in the LEP area to potential investors and developers. Deals made at MIPIM can bring millions of pounds of investment into an area, potentially leading to the creation of hundreds of associated jobs.

Peter Richardson, Chairman of D2N2, and David Ralph, its Chief Executive, both attended the MIPIM event as part of the joint Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire delegation.

LEP area sites featured in 2015 included:

  • Infinity Park in Derby - The £200million, 250 acre commercial and technology park, south of Derby city centre, is part of the Nottingham and Derby Enterprise Zone.
  • BioCity Nottingham extension site - The £30m life sciences building, currently taking shape next to the original BioCity site off Nottingham city centre, has received £6.5m funding from D2N2's Local Growth Fund.
  • The £150m intu Broadmarsh area development.

Collaboration was very much to the fore in 2015, with the 'Power of 3' launch (pictured above) a main feature of the D2N2 area offer.

East Midlands Airport hosted the launch of the initiaitive seeing the cities of Derby, Nottingham and Leicester pledging to work more closely together to attract inward investment; promoting the wider area's benefits rather than competing on a sole city basis for developers' business.

Andy Cliffe, East Midlands Airport Managing Director, said at the launch: "The East Midlands is centrally located in the UK and nowehere else in the country are there three such vibrant cities, so geographically close to one another. This is an incredibly strong proposition."
