£3.3million wind turbines factory contract for Derbyshire crane manufacturer

A leading UK crane and hoist manufacturer – and former recipient of a £150,000 D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership growth grant – has scooped a £3.3million contract to supply a planned wind turbine factory.

The Street Crane Company Ltd (pictured) of Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, manufactures and supplies overhead cranes and hoists for the UK and international clients.

Its new £3.3m contract is with Siemens Wind Power, which plans to build a 40,000 square metre wind turbine production and logistics factory in Hull.

Street Crane previously received a £150,000 grant through D2N2’s Unlocking Investment for Growth (UI4G) programme, which helped it expand its operations and create new jobs.

D2N2 is the private sector-led partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, community and voluntary groups which promotes economic growth and jobs creation across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. The UI4G programme, which has now closed, helped businesses invest more than £20m in growing their enterprises and is eventually expected to create more than 400 new jobs (double that estimated at the programme's beginning). UI4G was funded by the UK’s Regional Growth Fund and the European Regional Development Fund, and awarded through D2N2’s Investment Panel, with the aim of creating long term sustainable jobs.

Street Crane’s new £3.3m contract will involve the design, manufacture and installation of 37 cranes in total; to aid the production of the wind turbine blades, some of which will be up to 75metres long.

The new Hull facility is due to open in September 2016, with the first batch of turbines scheduled to come off the assembly line in early 2017.

Gus Zona, Operations Director at Street Crane, said:  “We are proud to be working with Siemens on such a significant project, which is going to have a major impact on the UK’s offshore wind industry as well as the wider economy.”
